"I am really disappointed with how I've been treated. I sold my vehicle on August 31, 2024. I alerted State Farm, in a phone call to Carrie Jaquin-Salisbury on September 4, 2024 that I would like to cancel my policy. In this phone call, I was advised to first send in my plates to the NY DMV before I should cancel to avoid any fines from the DMV. She said she could cancel my policy right then, but then I would receive a fine from the DMV. I asked not to cancel and that I was going to send them in ASAP. After sending in my plates to the DMV, and receiving confirmation that they were received I called again to State Farm to cancel my policy. This was on September 17, 2024. I was told by Carrie that while it was possible to cancel my policy, she was refusing to due to not receiving a form from the DMV. I told her that I would take care of anything with the DMV and that I just wanted to cancel my policy. I was informed by Carrie on the September 4th that she could cancel my policy but I would get fined. Now, she was denying having said that and was refusing to cancel my policy, saying I was twisting her words. This form is going to take weeks to get from the NY DMV as I have moved out of state and will need it to be forwarded. I am paying for insurance for a car I don't own and Carrie is refusing to cancel my policy despite numerous requests. She also became extremely agitated and aggressive with me over the phone, citing her years of work and high moral standard to condescend to me as though I was not just trying to resolve the sale of my car weeks after it had occurred and get out of her hair. I spoke with the DMV, and they informed me that my plates were received and my registration canceled as I requested and that I should be able to cancel my insurance without the form if I request. It is unreasonable that I should have to retain insurance on a vehicle that is not in my name, not registered to me, and I no longer have any financial or legal ties to. This will be reported to the DFS. Edit to respond: As I said above in the review that I have a feeling you didn't even read, I spoke with the DMV and they have received my plates and canceled my registration, so all of that response about the fine and the returning the plates is moot. Also, I don't know how lying to customers is considered "outstanding customer service" on Carrie's part, but that's your business to decide. Carrie should not have offered in the first place to cancel my policy when requested if she could not actually do so. If you guys record phone calls, I heavily suggest you check the phone call on 9/4/24 to see what she says. If there is no recording, I'm glad you're taking the word of an employee instead of a paying customer. This is neither right nor ethical, so while you may strive to do so at every transaction, you have certainly failed in this regard."
"Sierra Thank you for your review and very sorry you are disappointed in my agencies outstanding customer service. Carrie has been with State Farm for fifteen years. In NYS, it is mandated by the DMV if we cancel insurance on plates- we need to show either an Accord (Cancellation) letter from another insurance carrier OR the FS-6 Form from the DMV that is time and date stamped as to when plates are surrendered. If we as a company just cancel your insurance- you will have a $8 a day fine for Time Out of Force penalty. You can either pay the fine to the DMV or you have to turn in your plates for the amount of days of Time out of Force (no insurance on those specific plates). The second time this happens with the DMV within a year- you do NOT have the option of paying the fine but must turn in the plates for the amount of days not covered. Even though you sold the car and moved out of state- NYS still needs those plates to be turned in to avoid the $8 day fine. Once we receive the FS-6 Form, we will backdate to the date on the FS-6 Form. We have to make any cancellations to our Regional Office with documentation of the Accord or FS-6 Form. Above you say you have talked to the DMV and they received your plates- they may have but would still have to give you a specific DATE they were turned in so we can process that date- Carrie has told you that the tracking indication may have been done but the DMV would give you a specific DATE once it was processed- we cannot guess the exact date and it has to match or there is a $8 a day penalty otherwise.
